The Cheerful Giver

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,
"He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever."
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

3. Give to ministers of God. Philippians 4:19

4. Honor your father and mother.

5. Give to the poor. Ps. Give to the poor. You lend to God

6. Give cheerfully

Title :Are you in as disposable marriage

Genesis 2:24-25
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Prayer will prepare your for pressure but not for them to change. Prayer helps you to accept what you cannot change.

Good material give strong and enduring building. But weak materials lead to poor building.

To build a marriage on openness ( naked and not ashamed).
This leads to accountability. This denotes responsibility. Marriage demands accountability.

Being accountable to God, is when we confess our sins to Him.

Then we have trust. That is accepting what is being said without doubting.

Marriages are not sand castes by the beach. You build on a foundation of openness and trust.

Faith must be based on revelation. Once you have a desire confirm it with revelation.

Ten you faith become a calculated risk.

Marriage is not necessarily for happiness but for holiness.

Peculiarity of trust.

Be humble enough to be accountable to your spouse.

Trust is fragile.

While trust can be shattered by one event

HOT. Honest Open and Transparent.

Raising Your Faith Level

Written by Randy Clark

Patterns and keys to seeing more of the miraculous

Being in healing ministry, I have witnessed the miraculous regularly and seen thousands touched by God each year.

I remember two times when the Lord spoke something to me out of His Word, and it gave me an insight that brought an increase for healing. The first instance happened about two years ago, and the second about a year ago.

The first came out of 2 Corinthians 4:13, where Paul said, "It is written: 'I believed; therefore I have spoken.' Since we have that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak" (NIV).

I'd seen this Scripture many times, but when God quickened it to me, all of a sudden it took on life. All of a sudden I made this connection: Faith needs to be spoken. You can say you believe something, but if you don't have enough faith to declare it, to speak it, there's something that's not released.

I do not believe what the New Agers teach, that we make our reality by the words we speak. That's the difference between Christian and New Age thinking. Christian thinking is that the Lord is the one who gives the faith. We're in a dependent relationship with Him-we can't create anything we want. We create what He's showing us.

I realized I could speak things in faith, things that God is showing me. I used to say, "I believe God is going to heal some people tonight," but I quit saying that.

I started paying attention to numbers, and over time I started connecting the dots. I'd see how many people were in attendance and then how many got healed, and God showed me a pattern. We discovered that we almost never have fewer than 10 percent of the people get healed.

The other one came when I was in Brazil again, on the way to this Baptist church, Agua Vidas (Living Waters) Church. And I was thinking in my mind, In Jesus Christ, it's not yes and no-it's yes.

I didn't know where the Scripture reference was, but all these people had iPhones, so they took out their little Bible programs and they looked it up for me. It was 2 Corinthians 1. I read that passage and verse 20 was the key: "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ. And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God."

I had read that a lot, but all of a sudden it was as if the lights went on. These promises are not just biblical promise, though they include that. They are rhema word promises. They're not yes and no. It's not us saying, "Yes, I want it" and God saying, "If I give you a promise, sometimes it's no."

It's always yes regarding His promises. They're always yes. So, I got that, but that wasn't the part that really stood out to me. It was "And so through him (enabled by the Spirit) the 'Amen' is spoken by us"-and it was a plural.

And I got an understanding that the greatest miracles we'll see in the future will come when we have taught the church to raise its corporate faith. People need to know that if someone gets a word of knowledge for somebody else, it's not just the person giving the word whose faith goes up and who increases others' faith.

The whole congregation needs to understand how God works. When they understand the ways of God, it literally causes the whole congregation to rise up in their hearts and say, "Yes, God's getting ready to do this!" So all of us speak the "Amen," which means "let it be" or "So be it," to the glory of God.

ShareBit: Cortisol and Catecholamine - The story of death and life

Let me take you on a simple journey of chemistry and biology that shows how two brain chemicals determines whether we are having good stress or bad stress and if we are killing ourselves or giving ourselves a chance to live longer happily.

Cortisol is a chemical produced by the brain when the brain senses an emergency or threat to our life. This is how our ancestors were programed to react to the issues of life and death that they tend to face when hunting in the wild. The production of cortisol in the body is required to stimulate the body for extreme physical reaction - typically running or fighting back to avoid not being killed.  During these bodily exercise these chemicals are used up in the body and the body can return to a state of normalcy within a short period.

Interestingly, this same chemical is released during a state of frustration, whether at work or at home, threats to our job, negative comments by superiors, spouses, peers or juniors, verbal attacks and interestingly also boredom, impatience, tiredness, sadness, anger, and intense anxiety. These states of mind or causes of bad stress that generates cortisol in our body do not require physical or strenuous bodily responses which then tend to make  the chemical  linger in our body for longer than necessary.  In fact in many cases, as these bad stressors tend to linger, like threat to jobs, verbal attacks, boredom and tiredness this chemical stays almost permanently in the body.

But what does high level and persistent cortisol do to our body when it is not used up?

Below are a few examples:

·         Impaired cognitive performance

·         Suppressed thyroid function

·         Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia

·         Decreased bone density

·         Decrease in muscle tissue

·         Higher blood pressure

·         Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences

·          Increased abdominal fat, which is associated with a greater amount of health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, the development of metabolic syndrome, higher levels of "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems!

Source:  http://stress.about.com/od/stresshealth/a/cortisol.htm

Well now you are thinking... Ok, please hold that for a while and let us look at another chemical called  catecholamine.

Catecholamine is a chemical released by the brain when we have what are termed good stress. Challenges that we consider as invigorating releases catecholamine and some other chemicals.

Catecholamine, is the chemical that drives  excitement, positive mood, high energy and optimal brain function.

Simple examples of life situation that generates catecholamine are when we are given a task that leads to a reward (not a carrot and stick task), expecting the arrival of a loved one, expecting a payout, playing games which we are sure we will most probably win and other activities in our life that gives us positive anxiety.

Now here lies a problem, most issues that we face daily tend to be threatening rather than invigorating or at least so they seem.  Here also lies the solution.

To drive Catecholamine in your body as against cortisol why not turn what seems to be de-stabilizing threats to invigorating challenges?  You will say that is simply said than done?  Well, not really.

Let me give you two examples here and you can extrapolate to other life situation:

Example 1

You were given a target or task that "SEEMs" totally impossible. You can respond in two ways

a)      feel threatened by assuming that your boss just wanted to get rid of you or make a fool of you which now becomes a threat that drives the production of cortisol in your body killing your ability to think rationally or

b)      turn it into an invigorating challenge by;

1: Consider it as opportunity to test out your negotiating skill with your boss in which the outcome is at worst for you to still have to deliver on the task as given or at best change your boss' mind.

Merely imagining yourself succeeding with the negotiation already creates an invigorating challenge that drives your catecholamine, which drive your optimal mental function and excitement and help fight against any cortisol that may have been deposited in your body. Net net, you are a winner.

2. If you are like most winners, you just tell yourself "impossible is nothing" and create that sense of excitement that you are on your way again to delivering what others consider impossible.

3. This is the most important one to me: Consider the situation as a learning opportunity. Ask yourself the question, what new things can I learn from this. It is a given fact of life that every threat or challenge in life is a learning opportunity when approached with an open mind.  Fail or win, you will at least learn something.

Example 2:

An unprovoked verbal attack or an outburst of anger.

You can respond to this like any other person by "giving it back" to that person and risk getting into a verbal fight at the least if not a physical fight that just drives up your cortisol level.

Also, your situation is compounded by the fact that you never get over such confrontation for days which simply delivers more cortisol to your body.

However, you can do the unexpected, put up a smile (if appropriate and/or you can force one) or just calmly tell the person that you are sure you will also react as he or she is reacting if you are hurt like him, but it will be more beneficial for the two of you to discuss what the issues are and find an amicable solution. Then turn the situation to an invigorating challenge based on the three principles highlighted in first example above.

Most times, the attacker will always apologize for their bad behavior and henceforth respect your maturity.

Try this out on your spouse and see what your reward will be. :)

Bottom line: Keep your cortisol as low as possible as you cannot totally avoid it and drive your catecholamine by changing your view and attitude to situations that confronts you.

Beware of Cracks

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2).

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. (Ephesians 6:10).

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13)

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; (Ephesians 6:14)

The truth (guarding your waist with truth) is key to keeping evil attack away. You only open up the port to the devil and spiritual attack. Note, why the loin or waste, waist is the center of sexual activity for both genders. Once we start to deceive ourselves as to what

1 tim 4-16

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; (Ephesians 6:15)

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. (Ephesians 6:16)

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (Ephesians 6:17)

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Ephesians 6:18)

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:2)

Blood of Abel in Nigeria

The bible says, the blood of Christ speaks more than the blood of Abel.

What this means is that, is that the blood of Abel also speaks even though not as high as that of Christ.

Now for those that are being killed in Nigeria by the government based on negligence, or direct action of people in the government, the blood of the dead actually speak for them and these will surely lead to judgment against the perpetrators.

Take the case of Lagos ibadan express road and Bi-curtney and even that of Yaradua.

FW: <<KingdomTalk>> DO YOU NEED TO ASK FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT?

-----Original Message-----
From: KingdomTalk@yahoogroups.com [mailto:KingdomTalk@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Bayo Afolaranmi
Sent: Saturday, July 13, 2013 7:47 PM
To: Bayo Afolaranmi
Subject: <<KingdomTalk>> DO YOU NEED TO ASK FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Dearly Beloved,

DO YOU NEED TO ASK FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT?

"Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father.' So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir" (Galatians
4:6-7 NIV).

Recently, one of my online contacts asked me whether one can ask for the Holy Spirit or not. Let me based my devotional message this week on this question and the answer I gave the contact. The question about asking for the Holy Spirit is both theological and semantic. It is theological because it has to do with the third Person in the Godhead, and it is semantic because it is somehow a wordplay on when and how the Holy Spirit indwells a believer. Let me say here that when the Holy Spirit indwells a believer has been a controversial issue between the Pentecostals and the Evangelicals because of their different ways of interpreting the Bible. Since I am an Evangelical, I will first give the Evangelical position and later refer to the Pentecostal position. The Holy Spirit indwells a believer the moment such person believes in Jesus Christ and invites Him into his/her life as his/her personal Saviour and Lord (John 1:12-13; 14:16; Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 4:5-7; Ephesians 1:13) and He is there forever! However, the Holy Spirit may be "dormant" in the life of any believer that does not allow Him to operate. That is why Paul urged against such in Ephesians 4:30 and 1 Thessalonians 5:19. So, it is not out of place to pray that the Holy Spirit should have full control of one's life after one has consciously surrendered oneself to Him.

The Pentecostals on the other hands capitalize on some passages of the Bible like Luke 11:13; Acts 1:8 and other similar passages (especially in the Old Testament) to say that one has to ask for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Those passages are interpreted by the Evangelicals in line with what is called "Dispensational Theology." How and why will I ask for Who (that is, the Holy Spirit) God has graciously given me if truly I am a believer in Christ?

Another mixed-up issue that the Pentecostals make has to do with the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. These are entirely different from the Person of the Holy Spirit that is already living eternally with the believer! A believer can pray for the gifts and/or the manifestations of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:31; 14:1).

Either Evangelical or Pentecostal, the big question is: are you really a child of God? "[Jesus Christ] came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:11-13 NIV). Have you received Him into your life? You do not need to ask for (the indwelling of) the Holy Spirit if you have done so, but you can ask that He fill you with His power.

In His service,

Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor).

Prayer Point: Pray that you make your life conducive for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and that you will yield yourself to His leadership so that He will manifest His power in your life.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. (Lamentations 3:22)

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

Unquote

HIS compassions are inexhaustible and are renewed daily. Be rest assured you have his full daily load of compassion today. It is a given, for those that wait for HIM.

Have a blessed day.

Sunday Service - 16th June - You shall receive power.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

He gives the power to get wealth so that he may establish his covenant.

But note, "establish his covenant" his covenant are his words, obeying and getting the power to make wealth..

The purpose of power is to be a witness. - note a witness is someone who can give the first hand account of something who gives an account..... Who give evidence.

Note "give evidence".

Pls check the definition of the "witness" from the dictionary. .

Sample of witnessing - once I was blind now I can see... That is witnessing with evidence.

Note a witness is not a judge nor an advocate, we simply witnesses telling exactly what has happened to us, what we experienced.

Effective witnessing requires power;

Note, you are witnessing on first hand account, in the early stages of christianity as the disciples tell their stories with the compassion they have for the people which drives their witnessing souls were won... But note they knew what they are going into, extreme persecution, the courage to share the gospel is the power and the same still applies today, it could be pretty difficult to start a conversation, but remember you have the power and all you need to do is share your own stories and any other first hand relevant stories.

Compassion is the reflection on the suffering of others and taking action.

Recall Jesus heals with compassion and preaches with compassion.

So when you see someone who is heading to hell and you can see the punishment they are just about getting into, you will feel compassion arousing from within you and witnessing will surely lead to delivery.

Same applies to healing... Praying with compassion certainly leads to healing.

If you are the salt of the world that shows in your witnessing, you cannot be salt and not sweeten and sterilize as the case may ne - touch the life of all as salt.

Obeying the great commission is about witnessing...

Pray for people who are challenged in any way... That is being salt.

A sure path to Heaven - Forgive all your trespassers

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: (Matthew 6:14)

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:15)

Do you know the meaning of forgive? Fore - Give.... Give even before you were asked.

Authenticity vs Integrity : A good read!!

Authenticity vs Integrity

http://www.danstorey.com/authenticity-vs-integrity/

Posted on August 9, 2011 by admin

Lessons in life are a bit like buses! Sometimes you are walking around in a daze in the street and they hit you to remind you where you should be instead.

Recently, two particular buses have been going by with incredible frequency – let’s call them Authenticity and Integrity.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have not always been the most authentic and most integral person. I have certainly done my share of lying and cheating, to others, but even more damagingly, to myself. You see, you can lie to others and they might believe you. However, when you lie to yourself, it will never be fully believed, although you may be able to hide those particular thoughts for a moment.

Lately it seems that I have been presented with lots of challenges and situations that have reflected back at me the importance I place on both of these values.

Let’s begin with integrity, which has its roots in being whole and undivided. To be integral is to be at one, words and actions in alignment, thought and deeds one and the same.

Knowing what damage a web of lies creates, I recognise the anxiety in those I witness who try to uphold such a masquerade. It is truly a tiring task, as you are constantly trying to remember what you said to one person, and the other, and inevitably you find yourself in a situation whereby you have just told someone the exact opposite of what you last said to them.

I have seen people react in different ways when they find themselves backed into such a corner. Some try and laugh their way out of, suggesting that someone must have got their wires crossed and how funny such a situation is. Some try and charm their way out, implying that this misunderstanding is a small matter and that there are far more important elements to consider.

The situation I find most challenging is the angry denial whereby the deceiver trys to bully the deceived into doubting themselves. This is a sad situation for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the person who is being lied to is made to suffer even more. Its isn’t bad enough that they have been lied to, know their very character is being attacked that they would suggest that the deceiver would be anything other than genuine.

Secondly, it further compounds the web of deceipt, with neither party really knowing what is the truth. I say this because if it happens often enough, the deceiver may genuinely forget what has happened in given situations. They will know that they are lying, they just may not remember what the truth actually is.

Given long enough, these situations always turn ugly, its the only outcome on a long enough timescale. The liar is hoping that the situation resolves itself before anything is discovered but these things have a habit of dragging out, mainly due to the deceived being unhappy or unsatisfied with the eventual outcome. Something tells them that the whole picture is not available to them, it just depends on whether they have the desire to discover it.

So let me ask you now – what part of you is separate from the rest? What have you been saying, outloud or inside, that you know not to be true? Where are you living a double life?

I suggest that now is the time to change. Now is the time to be open and honest with yourself and everyone else involved in whatever situation you find yourself in (although weigh up whether you need to address the past) so that you can move forward without having to worry about what you have said or not said. Accept that there are different sides to you and that those people around you who really matter will love and cherish you and not turn you or part of you away. It may be a challenge for everyone involved, but believe me, it beats keeping up the lies.

The other bus is Authenticity, which means different things to different people.

Not able to train properly this morning (the gym was flooded the other day so cv only!) I found myself listening to my ipod for longer than normal. I listened to the speaker talking about discovering your purpose and then following it no matter what is going on around you.

For me, this struck a rough chord, a bit like a punch in the stomach, as I took stock of my life. Whilst I might be contributing a lot, I realised this had not always been the case, and I also realised there was part of me that wasn’t being actualised. If you have that sickening feeling of lack somewhere in your body then you know exactly what I mean.

Knowing that I am working on something else pretty big (more to come soon!) my feelings were more a case of regret that I hadn’t come to my realisation earlier and that I wasn’t already further down that track. Thinking about it now I know I am exactly where I need to be, but the impatient part of me would like to be a couple of steps ahead.

For me, there is only one obstacle to authenticity, and that is fear. Now this may take its form in a number of ways, but I know how it shows up for most people…

Comfort!

If you are comfortable right now, if you have settled for where you are right now, then the chances are you are not being authentic. We tend to create lives that are comfortable so that we do not feel the need to do anything more, whereas if we were to only live a complete life following our purpose, we would no doubt find a satisfaction far deeper than any material possessions could ever give. I’m talking about the feeling of a good job well done.

Each and every person on this planet has a different role to play. For some, their only role in life is to help someone else acheive something great, but they do this with love and connection.

Recently I was reminded of the brevity of life after a friend of a friend passed away. Had she not loved him in the brief time she had alive (she died young) he would never have been touched in a way that relit a candle within him. Adversity for some gives others the chance of greatness… we are all interlinked, separate stories what weave together to create the fable known as life!

Authenticity allows the story to continue. Not being authentic brings a premature ending to certain chapters, either because they involve you, or they involved someone you were supposed to interact with.

I am reminded of a little story about a guy who goes to heaven and is stood there chatting to God when he says, “It’s one heck of a mess down there! You should send someone down to clean it up!” To which God replied “I did! I sent you!

Take a look around you for a moment, and look beyond that into all of the areas where you have an influence. Now ask yourself “what am I here to do that will make the most significant impact on those people I come into contact with?” You may think even bigger than your circle of influence, but the question is the same. You may even add the following distinction to the question “… by doing what I love” and see what new answers you come up with.

As Howard Thurman said – “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive!

For me, I am committing to being more authentic, and more integral. I believe it is a process, as the many different parts of us come together, as we accept all of our quirks and pecadillos for what they are, our character.

When I was in Paris last year I spent a long time just staring at the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, and one thing about that beautiful painting is how dark it is. In fact, the darkness accentuates the highlights or her face and of ‘that’ smile, adding to it rather than taking away from it in any manner. Accept the shadows inside you, as they serve a purpose. Once you discover that higher purpose, you will find it easy to integrate that part of you in a holistic and ecological manner.

I am aware that this may put a cat amongst the pigeons, but I am happy to act as that catalyst for you. Reading this might have brought up a lot of stuff for you, and I hope it has, because it is only when you confront this properly, once and for all, that things will begin to change for the better. It takes strength to face up to these situations, a strength of character rather than a forceful and bullying approach to life.

You have created the situations around you, and now you have the choice what you do about it. If you don’t change your actions as a result of reading this, then you are clearly not ready for this lesson, which is a shame as the very people around you who can help are about to disappear forever.

But if you have got it, and I mean REALLY got it, then there may still be time to resolve the situation, but it has to begin with you. For those of you who know what I mean, it is going to be ok, no matter how this particular scenario turns out. Even short term problems give rise to long term massive successes, so open your heart, communicate honestly and truthfully and lay your cards on the table.

I honour your strength and hope that you are able to share this with those around you someday! To your success!!!

But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the LORD: and thou shalt not be given

But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the LORD: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. (Jeremiah 39:17)

For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD. (Jeremiah 39:18)

Sunday Service: Called to serve

Developing a servant heart

S. Spiritual Gift
H. Heart - your heart
A. Abilities
P. Personality
E. Experiences.

Luke 22; 24 -

And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. (Luke 22:25)

But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. (Luke 22:26)

For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. (Luke 22:27)

God measures gratness by service and not status.

Your availability is key.

David brought down Goliath not by power but by availability.

A servant heart is not Me First... But rather after you.

Trade Mark of rwal servant.

Real servant has an extraordinary sense of their calling.. Jer 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5)

Except a corn fall unto the ground it abdideth alone, until it falls onto the ground and die then it brings forth more life.

Service takes you beyond making living but really living life.

Real servant are faithful and dependable. They deliberately free themselves from all entanglement.

No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. (2 Timothy 2:4)

Being a servant is giving up your heart... Do the best with what you have.

You flaunt your seed not your need. Many people focus on their need not their seed.

John Wesley - do what you can to all you can at anytime you can at anywhere you can....

Less than perfect service is always better than good intentioned service that is never performed.

Phip 2; 5-9

Ministry is not an obligation it is an opportunity.

My Prayer Metaphor - Ryan G. Duns, SJ

Monday, June 02, 2008

My Prayer Metaphor  - Ryan G. Duns, SJ

So I've now concluded my annual retreat. It was a graced time of prayer and reflection and I feel a renewed sense of joy and enthusiasm as I enter into the busy travel schedule of the summer.

If I were to distill the movements of the retreat into a single image, it would be this: Green Lantern. As some of you know, the Green Lantern is a character from DC Comics. Given a green power ring, the Green Lantern is charged with being a force for good in the world. But the awesome power of the ring requires that it be recharged on occasion. The wearer must charge it using a small battery that draws its own power from the Central Power Battery. (yeah, it's a stretch, but bear with me)

You see, the power of the ring fails if it is not charged. Sure, the Green Lantern is still the Green Lantern but, without taking the time to charge his ring, he is unable to answer demands posed to him as a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Wearing a charged ring, the Green Lantern is possessed awesome abilities; a dead ring, however, is one that is cut off from the source of its power and bequeaths to its wearer no advantage at all.

This is how my prayer has been. When I pray, I bring myself into contact with the Source that gives direction and meaning to my life. I am more attentive to the needs of others, I am more aware of God's presence in my life, I am more fully committed to 'giving and not counting the cost' as I enact feats that, without this guidance, I know that I'd be incapable of doing. When I fail to pray, when I place other things as a priority in my life, I find myself limping. I am more easily irritable, I feel disconnected, I experience the temptations of success-at-any-cost and I measure myself against human-made standards rather than those set forth by God's Kingdom.

In short, when I prayer I feel empowered to be part of the Corps; when I do not pray, I experience myself as not living up to my potential or answering fully to the responsibilities with which I have been charged. When I pray, I can respond in amazing ways to my vocation; when I do not, I'm like a silly man running around in a funny suit.

This is a lesson I've had to learn the hard way this year. But I am glad to have learned it. To be a Christian is a heroic act in this day and age. We are beset by forces of darkness and a cultural nihilism that demands now, perhaps more than ever, for women and men to proclaim loudly the message of the Gospel. But sometimes we get caught up in the doing that we forget to center ourselves, that we think that the power that drives us is of our own making, rather than from the true Source of All. Our daily prayer reconnects us to this Source, bringing us back into contact with a power that is far beyond our comprehension or our control, a power that enables us to do great things when we synch ourselves with it.

Prayer is a heroic act, one through which we recognize our own limitations as finite beings and one that offers us our mission in this world and the power to achieve it. It is the discipline of the hero, the day-to-day work that makes him or her able to answer when called upon. Perhaps we Christians should develop something of our own Oath akin to that of the Green Lantern Corps:

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power...Green Lantern's light!

I would suggest that something like this would make prayer an oh-so-sexy endeavor, kind of like football or karate practice. It sort of casts things in terms of the Call of the King and Two Standards meditations found in the Spiritual Exercises. Thinking of prayer as an active participation, a practice-for-the-Kingdom, a girding of one's loins for battle, might go a long way in helping today's young people cultivate a deeper prayer life.
